Matterhorn Zermatt

An old favourite of the Matterhorn which at 4478m (14,692 ft) is one of the highest mountains in Europe. The shot was taken from Zermatt, which sits at 1620m (5,310 ft), way back in December 2001 on Fuji Velvia slide film. The mountain was the focus of the mountaineering world for much of the 19th century with the first ascent of the Matterhorn finally being completed in 1865 by a team led by Edward Whymper. While the summit was reached successfully it ended disastrously when four of its members fell to their deaths on the descent. It is estimated that over 500 alpinists have met their fate on the Matterhorn since the first climb in 1865, making it one of the deadliest peaks in the world. The climbers graveyard in Zermatt is a sobering place and a must visit for every aspiring mountaineer. The Matterhorn has become an iconic symbol of Switzerland and the Alps, and for many instantly brings to mind sitting in a cabin in the snow with a hot drink and some chocolate followed by fondue or swiss raclette. Eiger Sunset

Soft light falls over the north face of the Eiger, an imposing 3,970-metre (13,020 ft) mountain that forms part of the Bernese Alps looking over the valleys of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. Its precipitous northern wall, known as the Eigerwand or Nordwand, is at 1,800-metres (5,900 ft) the biggest north face in the Alps. First climbed in 1935 it is subject to several famous movies and books. It is often cynically referred to as Mordwand, which translates to "murder wall", as it is taken the lives of at least sixty-four climbers. Matterhorn and Alps

The Klein Matterhorn sits in the Pennine Alps and overlooks Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais. Schilthorn

The view out from the Schilthorn, a 2,970 metre high summit which is the highest mountain north of the Sefinenfurgge Passforms in the Bernese Alps. Perched above the village of Mürren and the valley of Lauterbrunnen, it is famous for the rotating restaurant and bar in the initial scenes of the 1969 James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Breithorn

The western summit of the Breithorn (German for "broad horn") as seen from Klein Matterhorn. Sitting at 4,164 m (13,661 ft) it is part of Pennine Alps and lies to the east of the Theodul Pass on the border between Switzerland and Italy.
