Mani Stones

Mani (Prayer) Stones stacked outside of Namche Bazaar (3440m), Nepalese Himalaya, Nepal. Mani stones, a form of prayer in Tibetan Buddhism, are normally inscribed with the six syllabled mantra of Avalokiteshvara (Om mani padme hum), which loosely translates to "Hail to the jewel in the lotus". Lingtren

The last rays of light grace the summit of Lingtren (6749m or 22,142 ft). It sits about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) in a direct line from Mount Everest in the Mahalangur Himal area of the Himalaya. First climbed in 1935, the summit of Lingtren forms part of on the international border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Shot taken on Fuji Velvia slide film.

Dried Lake

One of the coldest shots I have ever taken. Looking across frozen prayer flags to the 'Dried Lake' (5297m/17319 ft) and beyond towards Changtse (7553m/24780 ft) in Tibet. You can see the Khumbu Icefall making its way down to the right of the photo with Everest just off frame to the right. Pashupatinath Meditations

A Holy man meditating at Pashupatinath Temple, a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to Pashupatinath. The complex is a diverse collection of temples, ashrams, images and inscriptions raised over the centuries along the banks of the sacred Bagmati river. Is included as one of the seven monument groups in UNESCO's designation of Kathmandu Valley as a cultural heritage site and unfortunately suffered significant damage in the earthquake in 2015. Tengboche Monastery

The amazing site of the Tengboche Monastery nestled in the mountains at 3,867 metres (12,687 ft) presents itself like a timewarp from a different age. The Tengboche Monastery (Thyangboche Monastery) also known as Dawa Choling Gompa, sits in the area of Khumjung which is part of in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal. The monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Nepalese Sherpa community and the ancient scriptures of Tibet refer to this valley along with Rowlang and Khanbalung valleys as sacred places. Tenzing Norgay, who was a local inhabitant of Tengboche village, was the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary on the British 1953 expedition. Nuptse Storm

Massive monsoon thunderheads stretch up to the stratosphere above the already lofty summit of Nuptse at 7861m (25,791 ft). The Himalya have a way of making one feel small and insignificant like nowhere else I have experienced. The mountains just seem impossibly high in the sky, the landscape impossibly big. The wall in front of me here climbs 2.8km (1.73mi) vertically from the valley floor. The shot is taken just before sunrise from Kala Pattar at 5545m (18192 ft). At 5500m you have exactly 50% of the oxygen available at sea level. Nuptse sits two km WSW of Mount Everest. Khumbu region of the Mahalangur Himal, Nepalese Himalayas, Nepal. Namche Bazaar

Namche Bazaar at dawn with the Kwangde peaks lit up by the first rays of light. It is located in the Solukhumbu District in the Sagarmatha Zone of north-eastern Nepal. The village is 3,440 metres (11,286 ft) at its low point. Traditionally a trading post for the Khumbu region to exchange yak cheese and butter with agricultural goods grown at lower altitudes it has become a major climbing and trekking hub. Access is still via foot from Lukla as there is no vehicle navigable roads and no passenger airport. Shot on Fuji Velvia slide film.

Nepalese Porter

A nepalese porter carries goods for sale up to Namche Bazzar. Often trekking in husband and wife teams, carrying 93 percent and 66 percent of their body weights respectively, for weeks at a time over steep inclines at high altitude. Studies have shown them to be the most efficient in the world consuming less energy per kilogram than a standard backpacker would need to shoulder about half the same weight. They carry their load in a Doko, which is an oversized basket that rests against the back. Most of the weight is taken on the crown of the head via a strap that runs from the head underneath the Doko. The T-shaped walking stick is called a Tokma to take some of the strain off the back and assist rest. Changri Nup Glacier Porter

Yak

Yak taking a rest. Adapted to high altitude with larger lungs and hearts than normal cattle, they continue to produce foetal haemoglobin their whole life to increase oxygen carrying capacity. Conversely at low altitudes or above 15 degrees C (59 F) they begin to suffer from heat exhaustion due to a thick layer of subcutaneous fat combined with a lack of functioning sweat glands. Chhukung Ri Ascent

One of my personal favorites as it represents almost four weeks of hard work to get the shot. Our sherpas in the frame were waiting patiently for me while taking a 'photo' break to catch my breath a short distance from summit of Chhukung Ri (5546m or 18200ft) on the right. The incredible spire of Ama Dablam (6856m) rising above the cloud filled valley in the background. Only half the oxygen available at 5000m when compared to sea level. Himalayan Mountain Tahr

An elusive Himalayan Mountain Tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) found while wandering off track between Tengboche and Namche Bazaar. Normally found on high altitude slopes ranging between 2,500 and 5,000 m (8,200 and 16,400 ft), their population is declining in the Himalayas due to hunting and habitat loss. Everest Sunrise

A misty sunrise over Mt Everest, also known as Chomolungma or Sagarmatha, towering above at a massive 8,848 metres (29,029 ft). The summit of Mt Everest has less then 33% of the oxygen available at sea level. I hiked up Kala Pattar 5,644.5 m (18,519 ft) in the dark with a head torch three mornings in a row in an attempt to get this shot. At 5500m you have exactly 50% of the Oxygen available at sea level. The highest mountain on earth, Mt Everest is in the Mahalangur Range of the Himalayas and sits on the international border between China (Tibet Autonomous Region) and Nepal. Gokyo Lakes

"When you stand at the high passes of the Himalayas, is it the flag that moves and flutters? Or is it the wind ? Neither, it is your mind ". Hui Neng, 6th Buddhist patriarch of China (713 AD). Looking over the third Gokyo lake, trying to catch ones breath in the thin air.
