Pyramid of Khafre

The first built and last standing of the original wonders of the world, the Great Pyramids of Giza remained the tallest human structures for 3800 years. The Pyramid of Khafre (or Chephren) seen here was built around 2570 BC (4587 years ago) to a height of 143.5 m (471 ft). Originally covered by casing stones that formed a smooth polished white outer surface made of Tura limestone; what is seen today is the underlying core structure after the valuable outer stones were loosened by earthquakes and robbed reducing the height to 136.4 metres (448 ft). It is unknown when the casing stones were removed however they were still in place in 1646 AD when John Greaves, professor of Astronomy at Oxford University visited and wrote Pyramidographia. It was built as the tomb of the Fourth-Dynasty pharaoh Khafre (Chefren), who ruled from c. 2558 to 2532 BC. Shot taken on Film.

Mt Sinai

A dusting of desert snow covers the cold desolate top of Mt Sinai as one looks across the red-granite mountain peaks on the Sinai Peninsula. Also known by the names Mount Horeb and Gabal Musa (the 'Mountain of Moses'), the mountain is considered to be a the likely location of the biblical Mount Sinai. Mount Sinai is mentioned many times both the Bible, and the Quran, particularly in the book of Exodus. According to Jewish, Christian, and Islamic tradition, the biblical Mount Sinai was the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments. Mt Sinai sits at 2,285 m (7,497 ft) in the St Katherine region of the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. Shot taken on film.

Oasis in the Great Sand Sea

A small oasis we camped at in the Great Sand Sea near the Egyptian / Libyan boarder. The Great Sand Sea is a subset of the Sahara that covers a remote 72,000 km² (27,800 square miles) sand desert region in North Africa stretching between western Egypt and eastern Libya. Hard to say exactly where the shot was taken as it was after a full day offroad in a 4WD across the dunes from the larger oasis town of Siwa, which is about 50 km (30 mi) east of the Libyan border. The mountains are actually old coral reefs stranded in an empty ocean of sand; after hiking up them you could still see the coral heads intact. We camped here for a night; if you look closely you can see the small yellow tents to the right of the oasis. This is an old film shot; this whole area is now off limits due to security issues in Libya and trafficking across the border.
