Winter conditions were still holding on in the Rockies when I took this shot of a couple of Rams who were no doubt dreaming of warmer conditions and spring pasture. The horns of bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis) rams can weigh up to 14 kg (30 lb), while the sheep themselves weigh up to 140 kg (300 lb). Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada
A 2nd shot of the small cascade in the south western end of Maligne Lake. It’s a testimony to how brutal the winters are up here high in the Rockies that not even moss seems to be growing on these falls. I have only seen one picture of this waterfall up on the web and it was named as Teardrop Falls but my GPS for this spot does not correspond with where Teardrop Falls or Pin Cushion Point is on the map so I assume it’s another unnamed fall. American Marten (Martes americana), also known as a Pine Marten, in the snow on Hudson Bay Mountain near Smithers in Northern British Columbia. Martens normally eat small mammals such as squirrels and rodents. They are however related to the wolverine and capable of hunting much larger snowshoe hares and marmots. I was lucky enough to see this guy out of the corner of my eye while I was snowboarding. He ran down a tree well; so I boarded over, took my backpack off, got my camera out, changed out the wide angle lens for the 400mm, and waited. After sitting there quietly for a few minutes he then popped his head up again.
