Ice climbing on the Perito Moreno Glacier. The glacier consists of over 250 km2 (97 sq mi) of ice spanning 30 km (19 mi) in length and a width of 5km at its terminus. One of 48 glaciers that form part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the high altitude ice field has a total area of 12,363 km2 (4,773 sq mi) of ice. A Carancho or Southern Crested-Caracara (Caracara plancus) watches as we set up camp for the night. The second largest species of falcon it has a wingspan of 120–132 cm (47–52 in). An intelligent raptor that should not to be taken lightly, it has been known to take down animals as large as lambs through the specific targeting of their eyesight whereby once blind they then become easy pickings.
