Colonia del Sacramento was founded in 1680 by the Portuguese and due to its strategic position across the river from Buenos Aires soon became a smuggling port for pirates. Its sovereignty was contested over the passing centuries and the city changed hands several times between Spain and Portugal. The Echo Point Hut was built by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service in 1962. Sitting in the final stages of the 82 km (51 mi) Overland Track between Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair the often bypassed wooden hut remains in service in its original state and sleeps 8 people.
