Cho La Pass

We were told conditions could be treacherous crossing the Cho La; and treacherous they were with very limited visibility and fresh snow. At 5,420 metres (17,782 ft) above sea level a glacier covers the entire saddle of the pass and fresh snow can conceal dangerous crevasses. When trekking in Nepal you often end up with some very hardy stray dogs following you for days on end in the high altitude in the hope of obtaining some food. The sherpas happily let them find a path across the pass first! While we missed the views of the 7000 to 8000m (23,000 to 26,000 ft) peaks around the pass I did manage to get this shot just as we entered the ice field before the clouds closed in completely. We spent the best part of a month trekking at altitude in Nepal; and crossing this pass was certainly one of the highlights. The Cho La or Chhugyuma La pass is in the Solukhumbu District in northeastern Nepal and connects the Gokyo valley to the Everest valley. Shot on Fuji Velvia slide film. Nepalese Himalaya, Nepal

Maligne Canyon Ice Climbing

Ice climbers on a frozen waterfall at Maligne Canyon. It is one of the deepest river canyons found in the Canadian Rockies at 55m (180 ft). The canyon is part of a predominantly underground river system that runs between Medicine Lake and the Athabasca River. Jasper, Alberta, Canada.

Arctic Marshland

A lone hiker crosses the moss filled marsh below Vierranvarri and Toppslugan on the trail up towards Kebnekaise. The marsh lies within the Arctic circle in the Scandinavian Mountains (Scandes) at 67°53″ North. Lapland, Sweden.

Artist Point

A lone camper drinks a cup of hot tea on the horizon as the last light begins to fade up at Artist point. Mt Baker (3,286 m or 10,781 ft) forms the high point in the background to the right of frame. This shot was taken after hiking though the snow up to Artist point in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. We then hiked down in the dark with our head torches. Washington State, USA.

Assiniboine Sunset from Nub Peak

“The world is big and I want to have a good look at it before it gets dark.” John Muir. Taken at sunset after scrambling up the ridge to Nub Peak (2,755 m or 9,039 ft). I like the perspective up here as Mount Assiniboine (3,618m or 11,870ft) rightfully towers over Sunburst Peak in the foreground which you don’t appreciate at the nublet far below. Chhukung Ri Ascent

One of my personal favorites as it represents almost four weeks of hard work to get the shot. Our sherpas in the frame were waiting patiently for me while taking a 'photo' break to catch my breath a short distance from summit of Chhukung Ri (5546m or 18200ft) on the right. The incredible spire of Ama Dablam (6856m) rising above the cloud filled valley in the background. Only half the oxygen available at 5000m when compared to sea level. Erupting Volcano

A close hand wide angle shot of an eruption taken from the creator rim of Mt Yasur volcano on Tanna Island, Vanuatu. Quite the unnerving experience as each of those blocks of magma is about the size of a refrigerator! Imagine watching an explosion while experiencing an earthquake and listening to a sonic boom. Then as you stare numbly into space your trance is broken by the whistling noise of the magma falling from the sky with the hope it falls short of where you are standing.
